Hatanodai – Abandoned Houses

Abandoned places in Japan never cease to amaze me. While I was living in Hatanodai I stumbled across my own local abandoned building. The reason why there are so many of these in Japan is because demolishing a house is actually quite expensive. People who inherit these houses often do not have the money to demolish let alone build a new house. The government isn’t doing that much about it even though these houses can be a real burden for people in the same neighborhood (insects, rodents, mold, etc). Although I don’t want to live close to houses like these, I do think they are pretty interesting for sightseeing and give off a spooky vibe at night ^^;;

This is a great site with brilliant photos of abandoned places in Japan: http://www.haikyo.org/
