Takadanobaba – Astro Boy & Language Schools
Takadanobaba (高田馬場) is located in Shinjuku and is a bubbly area filled with students and young adults. Famous Waseda University (one of Japan’s well known Universities) and many Japanese language schools can be found here. The main street in front of the station has lots of cheap pubs, restaurants, some shops, a few game centers and Karaoke Buildings. In front of the station you’ll find a huge wall painting of Astro Boy, a fictional character created in 1952 by Osamu Tezuka.
Next to the station you can find the Shopping Mall “Big Box” (it really looks like a big box..) which has a few fashion and beauty shops, Uniqlo, Daiso and more. On the upper floors you can find a huge Taito Game Center, bowling center and some restaurants. If you’re a student or if you want to get some inspiration for the student life in Japan, Takadanobaba is a really nice area to explore. I have been studying in Takadanobaba at the Japanese Language School ‘Yoshida’, which was the most amazing time of my life. The teachers are friendly and explain things amazingly well.
In Takadanobaba you can also find the Kanda river (神田川), which is great to visit during the Sakura Period. Sakura Trees are planted along the river, creating some amazing scenery. During the summer there are some local events like the Mikoshi (portable Shrine) Matsuri.
Takadanobaba is easy to reach as it’s a stop on the Yamanote Line. You can also take the Seibu Shinjuku Line or the Metro Tozai Line.
