Tennoji Temple and Cemetery in Yanaka, Tokyo

The Tennoji Temple (天王寺) in Yanaka, Tokyo is a beautiful Temple bordering Yanaka cemetery. The Temple was originally constructed in 1274. It has a large, impressive Buddha and a statue of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy. During warm weather you’ll often see cats relaxing around the Temple and the cemetery. While some people find a trip to a cemetery to be awkward, it’s a quite an impressive sight and easy to combine with a walk to Tennoji Temple and Yanaka, the Edo Style neighborhood.

Free entry and open daily. Tennoji Temple is a one minute walk from Nippori Station. Be sure to take the West Exit, then you can check the local map or just follow the signs.
